Northwoods Life | Lake Superior Ice Caves

I am sure by now with all of the national media attention they have garnered you have heard about the Lake Superior Ice Caves along the Apostle Island National Shoreline just outside of the vacation destination Bayfield,Wisconsin. (Fun fact, the Husband Man & I got married in Bayfield!)…. But if you haven’t, let me introduce them to you!

A few weeks back the Husband Man made the trek to see them and they are quite the sight! After roughly a 20-minute hike along a frozen Lake Superior you come upon them. Sadly they do not occur every year (in fact I believe 2009 was the last time prior to this year they were safely accessible). With the extreme cold weather this Winter has brought, there has been a bright side, which are these beauties! Normally reachable only by kayak in a much warmer time of year these amazing caves show a whole new side with the illuminessence of the ice. These ice caves are just one more awesome thing you can find here in the Northwoods!
