Turntable Tuesday | Supertramp, Breakfast in America

When we first started collecting records many of them were thrift store or resale shop finds (and still are!) This is always much better on the pocketbook and a great way to save some really amazing albums from being lost forever. Though over time our collection has grown larger and larger we do still have a handful of select favorites we seem to spin much more often than others. The album Breakfast in America by Supertramp is an example of all of these things to us!

I happen to find this album for a whopping $2 in the basement of such described antique store and it was in amazing condition (not always the case with finds in these types of locations). I have always loved Supertramp but little did I know this whole album is amazing! Breakfast in America was the 1979 breakout album for Supertramp after having already produced several studio recordings before this. Fun fact, Breakfast in America is still the #1 selling English language album of all time to date in France.

For awhile this lived on our turntable, now we still pull it out of hiding more often than many other records we possess, mostly because it has hits like Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home and The Logical song but there is so much more to this album than just those songs…. EVERY song is amazing!

  1. I'm entirely with you Krista, Breakfast in America is one of my favorite albums too. It becomes more special with every listen. I've always felt that Roger Hodgson's songs on the album are the ones that resonated with me the most (The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Child of Vision, Lord is it Mine, and the title track, Breakfast in America). If you ever get the opportunity to see Roger play these live, he's touring right now and of all the shows I've seen, I have never experienced a concert like his ever before, he's got such uplifting, radiant charisma, very tight-knit chemistry with his band and there is so much energy, life and magic in his songs. No doubt, not only a must-see but also a must-feel :) Roger played Milwaukee this past April/May and I'm sure he'll play there again, but if you'd like to see him sooner, Naperville, IL is just a short trip away from Milwaukee- I would post his tour info here but it may be easier to read on his site, http://www.rogerhodgson.com/documents/tour.html

  2. One of my favorite albums! Timeless songs that I still love hearing on the radio today! I thought I’d give a link to a video that is from Roger Hodgson‘s channel – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tODaH_fGtMY. A bit of trivia – many people are not aware that although Roger and Rick shared writing credit, they actually wrote and composed separately with each singing their own songs. Roger gave us the greatest hits off this album to include the title track, The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, and he also gave us Dreamer, Give a Little Bit, Fool’s Overture, It’s Raining Again, School, and so many more. I had the great fortune of seeing Roger in concert twice last year and cannot wait to see him again in IL in July. That voice of his is incredible and sounds even better today than on my Supertramp vinyls. Check out Roger’s tour dates on Events at http://www.Facebook.com/RogerHodgson. If he is performing near you, go. Even if he is not near you, go. You will be so glad that you did.

  4. ‘Breakfast In America’, is a classical rock album, no doubt, and it was the biggest selling album of the band in the USA. But I want to talk a little about the great man behind this album: Roger Hodgson.
Roger recorded 5 memorable songs on this album (The Logical Song, Breakfast In America, Take The Long Way Home, Lord Is It Mine, Child Of Vision); in fact, he is the only composer of these songs, and made all the arrangements. The band just followed the guidelines of Roger in these 5 great songs. By the way, currently, Roger continues touring worldwide and singing those same beautiful songs.

The years have not changed the voice of Roger, in fact Roger sings better now than before, and I also prefer the current sound of songs performed live than the studio recordings (Supertramp phase). The band accompanying Roger is amazing, perfect, and all his great hits as ‘Dreamer’, ‘The Logical Song’, ‘Give A Little Bit’, ‘It’s Raining Again’, ‘Breakfast In America’, ‘Take The Long Way Home’, ‘Lord Is It Mine’, ‘Child Of Vision’, ‘Fool’s Overture’, ‘The Meaning’, ‘Easy Does It’, ‘Sister Moonshine’, ‘School’, ‘Hide In Your Shell’, among others, as well as songs from the solo albums, you can hear at Roger’s concerts.
Now, Roger is really appreciated and valued as it should be. Roger is happy, safe, peaceful, and transmits it completely through their performances. Roger's songs are now a reflex, a mirror of how Roger is living your present wonderful phase.

Well, I’m from Brasil and I ‘follow’ Roger’s shows since 1998, Roger played 4 times in my country and he will play again in October, this year, 2014, the 5th time! It will be unforgettable, again, I know!
And for all who want to see Roger, check his schedule by official Facebook or Website (address below). I'm sure everyone will relive the past and enjoy the present better seeing the wonderful Roger’s shows!
    Peace!

  5. Breakfast in America is still alive nowadays, and not only because the songs includes in this album are great. We are very lucky to can enjoy Roger Hodgson on stage, performing all his classics from this album, as "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America","Take The Long Way Home", "Lord Is It Mine", "Child Of Vision" and many more. A Roger concert is an astonishing experience. I've seen so many shows in my life, but what I feel in a Roger show is unique, I haven't seen ever such a communication between an Artist and his audience, as Roger does, all the feelings you can experienced: It's a thrill, a blast, chills and goosebumps, all at the same time... Can’t wait to see him again next week in Spain.
